CATESOL is an association of professionals advancing the quality of English language teaching and learning through professional development, research, standards, and advocacy.
CATESOL, founded in 1969, is a nonprofit professional association open to anyone concerned with the teaching of English to non-native speakers.
CATESOL members include classroom teachers at all levels, instructors in teacher- training programs, university students, aides, publishers, and administrators in California and Nevada.
CATESOL works to ensure that all of its members will be equally represented. Each level of instruction, i.e., elementary, secondary, adult, community college, college/university, and intensive English programs (IEP), is represented by a member on the board of directors. There are 11 chapters: Bay Area, Capital Area, Inland Empire, Los Padres, Northern Nevada, Orange County, San Diego, Saroyan, Southern Nevada, Steinbeck, and Yosemite.
CATESOL is the largest U.S. Affiliate of TESOL, an international association of teachers of English to non-native speakers, which has affiliates in 170 countries, including the U.S.
CATESOL promotes professional competence and professional standards in the teaching of English language learners, monitors educational policy, and represents the needs of its members and their students to decision-making bodies such as school districts and legislatures, using the services of professional advocates in California and Nevada, and in Washington, DC.
CATESOL holds an annual conference featuring noted speakers, workshops, and presentations on teaching techniques and current research as well as publishers’ exhibits. Annual regional conferences are held in the San Francisco Bay area, the greater Los Angeles area, and San Diego County. Also, chapters provide local professional development opportunities throughout California and Nevada throughout the year, offering online and/or onsite opportunities.
CATESOL publishes a newsletter, an e-bulletin, and a scholarly journal. The CATESOL News is published quarterly and is available online at http://catesolnews.org. The CATESOL Journal offers refereed articles on practical teaching ideas and recent developments in research on its website at http://catesoljournal.org. The CATESOL Update is sent twice-monthly to current members to provide a calendar of events and news blurbs.
